Gampangnya ECM adalah otak utama yang mengendalikan mesin sesuai dengan kondisi yang sedang terjadi. ECM berfungsi sangat penting pada setiap kendaraan. Tidak terkecuali pada Hilux berkode TGN 26 yang meluputi mesin berkode awal TR  yaitu 2TR-FE dengan kubikasi mesin 2.7L VVT-i bensin dengan penggerak 4WD.

Kerusakan ECM dapat menyebabkan kinerja mesin menjadi tidak maksimal atau bahkan mati. Kerusakan ECM harus segera ditangani dengan benar. Kerusakan komponen elektronik didalamnya akan diketahui jika sebelumnya dilakukan pemeriksaan dengan panduan yang benar.
